Over 70 ciders were entered in the 2015 Cider Competitions, more than 4 times the number entered the previous year.
There are two statewide competitions, each featuring different classes of cider.
The California Cider Competition, now in it's third year, featured 38 California grown ciders made from California apples in 2015. There were two divisions: Estate Grown, where all apples were grown by the cidermaker, and California Grown, where all apples are grown in California.
The Mendocino Apple Show International Cider Competition, now in its second year, was launchced in 2015 to provide a format for both Commercial Ciders and Enthusiast cidermakers. Ciders entered in these division are allowed to use apples, juice or concentrate from any other sources. 35 ciders were entered, all of which were fermented in California.
Last year, ten judges convened for a day of professional level cider sensory training to add to their extensive background. Lead by Head Judge Bob Peak, Head Judge Deborah Parker Wong, and Head Trainer Toua Dougherty, these beverage sensory experts provided a day of professional level cider sensory training. The judging panel was comprised of cidermakers, beverage buyers, beverage and food media, professional food and beverage judges.
